The Situationists and the City: A Reader

Description

The French radicals at the forefront of the revolts in Paris in 1968 were re-imagining the city as a revolutionary utopia. The Situationist International (SI), led by Guy Debord and central to the Paris uprising in May 1968, published many incendiary texts on politics and art in the journal "Internationale Situationniste". One central theme to their work was rethinking the city: from a site for routine consumption and work to a utopia that breaks down barriers between function and play. In this essential volume, Tom McDonough collects together all of the SI's key essays on urbanism and the city. The book will be strikingly illustrated by images that were core to the SI project. It will include such key texts as "The Theory of Derive", "Formulary for a New Urbanism", and many previously untranslated texts, including those that came out of the Situationists' collaboration with Henri Lefebvre.

"Pedigree "is Georges Simenon s longest, most unlikely, and most adventurous novel, the book that is increasingly seen to lie at the heart of his outsize achievement as a chronicler of modern self and society. In the early 1940s, Simenon began work on a memoir of his Belgian childhood. He showed the initial pages to Andre Gide, who urged him to turn them into a novel. The result was, Simenon later quipped, a book in which everything is true but nothing is accurate. Spanning the years from the beginning of the century, with its political instability and terrorist threats, to the end of the First World War in 1918, Pedigree is an epic of everyday existence in all its messy unfinished intensity and density, a story about the coming-of-age of a precocious and curious Ask someone who works with The Situationists and the City: A Reader free download pdf horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse's instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods - reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing - the horse will be confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved - animal and human - will be happier, safer, and more productive. Horse trainer and instructor, Cherry Hill believes that every greater human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behaviour and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his "fight or fight" instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?
